Forest Light

My studio, Forest Light, is located in the piedmont or central NC. It is surrounded by tall white and red oak and poplar, interspersed with maple, beech, gum, sourwood, dogwood, Japanese maple and pine. The changing seasons and weather, and especially the light, continually transform the appearance of these woods. As I began this series of tree paintings, more careful representation based on observation frequently gave way to invention as the shifting light conjured up prisms of color and the strong verticals and arcs of the trees suggested a stricter geometry. I use the patterns of foliage and texture of the oil sticks to add visual complexity. Light, like water, is essential to life.
